Not Even Morphine Can Help This Bama Team

By Jay Coulter
jccoulter@gmail.com

What a wild weekend – and I’m not just talking about on the field. I had a kidney stone attack at about 2 a.m. on Saturday morning and spent last night in the hospital. It was my first visit to a hospital as an honored guest.

I was sent home this afternoon with painkiller and told to be ready to "pass it" sometime this week. And Alabama thought they were having a bad day.

As I lay in my morphine-induced state last night, I looked up at the television and saw the following: Louisiana-Monroe 21 – Alabama 14.

At that point, I realized how really good morphine can feel. Surely I was dreaming. I found out this morning otherwise.

Say what you will about Auburn. But this proud program has never lost to such a dreadful team. Alabama can spin this anyway they want; but they are in worst shape today than they were a year ago.

Many have speculated whether it will have an effect on Saturday’s Iron Bowl. Most believe it will not. I disagree.

This is a devastating loss for the Alabama program. It’s arguably the worst defeat in the school’s history. You don’t rebound from a loss like that in a week.

There’s no way Alabama recovers.

Don’t get me wrong. Auburn will still have to play well to win. But rarely does the better team lose. Auburn is clearly the better team this season.

Alabama fans have to be asking themselves today whether or not they hired the right person. At $4 million a year, there’s zero tolerance for a loss like what Alabama suffered on Saturday.

Can Nick Saban turn the Bama program around? Will he fail again like he did in Miami? Those are all questions that must be answered.

After all, not even Mike Shula brought Alabama down this far.

Let the games begin. It’s officially Iron Bowl Week.

Conditional Disagreement

Jay -

I have to say I disagree with your statements concerning this Alabama game's impact on the Iron Bowl -- conditionally, that is. Don't get me wrong, I love seeing Alabama lose, no matter who the opponent is; and the more embarrassing the loss, the more joy I take out of it. However, I wish this hadn't happened the weekend before the Iron Bowl for a number of reasons.

I think it could be a big advantage to Alabama and a big disadvantage to Auburn. I hope this doesn't happen, but couldn't you see the possibility that given Alabama's loss to ULM our guys might get complacent and think they can walk through the game? I'm not saying that it will happen, I'm saying it could happen. And also, Alabama could rebound and have an excellent week of practice because of the embarrassment they suffered, and vow not to let that happen again.

In a season full of wacky upsets and the exact opposite of what you would expect to happen actually happening, isn't it feasible that Alabama could lose to a sub-par Sun Belt team and then end a 5-game skid to Auburn?

Lastly, it's the Iron Bowl. Throw out the records, anything can happen. More cliches. This loss doesn't give me a lick of confidence for the Iron Bowl. Hell, it was only eight days ago that UGA made us their bitch.

The conditional part of my argument is that if Alabama's players take the practice fields with a "woe is us, we're terrible" attitude, they have no chance. However, if they fire it up and get prepared while we think it's gonna be a cakewalk, it could be trouble on Saturday. I just don't have a good feeling about this game.

Getting up for the game

While some may say this isn't a big game, because bammer lost to La Monroe, this is the IRON BOWL.  This is for all the marbles for another year.  This is THE biggest game of the year.  This win is the difference between a decent year and a year like bama's.  Tuberville does a great job getting the players ready for big games.  THIS IS A BIG GAME.

These players have an opportunity to do something no other Auburn player has ever done and that is claim six wins in a row against the "mighty bammers".  Also, another group of seniors can claim to have never lost to the "mighty bammer" nation.  A win here moves us closer to shutting up the bammers about their 9 in a row against us. I want the bammers to be totally humiliated.

If Auburn can't get fired up for this game, we don't deserve to win.

I tend to agree with Powerofdixie and James .....

for the most part. Remember 2001, remember who the over whelming favorite was, remember the final score. Bama is wounded and for anyother team in the league playing them that would be an advantage. But for the Iron Bowl it is very dangerous for AU. Remember people if you think that Bama hasn't spent the last week preparing for AU instead of ULM then think again. UT did it in '04 by splitting practice time for their last 2 games against Vandy and Kentucky with plays for the SEC champ game against AU and it resulted in scraping by Vandy and Kentucky and giving AU a hard time. So don't think that AU is a shoe in for the victory. I would hope that our players realize this and can go out and stay focused and have a great week of preparation....they will need it. Interesting that you bring up 2001

Just this morning I was reading the Huntsville Times, and Philip Marshall had this article, talking about how that game changed everything in Tubs' approach to the Iron Bowl:

It's been working so far. I still have a bad feeling, though!

Preparation

I love love love Bama's loss to ULM, but it could be the worst thing for the Iron Bowl - depending on our players. I have no doubt that Bama will be up for the game, the question is will we be over confident. We need to play like we did against Florida, not Georgia.
