Conversation At Auburn Centers on Bowl Talk and Coaching Moves

By Jay Coulter
jccoulter@gmail.com

The dust is starting to settle on the 72nd Iron Bowl. Talk now centers on what bowl Auburn will be heading to and whether or not Tommy Tuberville will be packing for Texas A&M, Arkansas or Nebraska.

All indications are that Texas A&M is moving in another direction in its search for a new head coach. It appears likely the Aggies will end up with Houston Texans assistant Mike Sherman. On Sunday, Tuberville said that Texas A&M still had not contacted him or athletic director Jay Jacobs about the position.

Tuberville is scheduled to meet today with school president Jay Gogue and Jacobs. Talks will likely center around a contract extension for Tuberville, plus raises for the assistants and possibly a new indoor practice facility.

Just as Tuberville’s candidacy was dying down in College Station, it picked up steam in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Houston Nutt has yet to be fired, but that still hasn’t stopped the media in the state from speculating on a Tuberville move. Being an Arkansas native, it’s only natural that his name should come up with the Hogs.

Don’t expect Arkansas to come up with the money necessary to lure Tuberville. Besides, he turned the job down back in 1999 before coming to Auburn. Tuberville’s name has also been mentioned in connection with Nebraska.

A name that’s being thrown around at Ole Miss is Will Muschamp. He’ll likely be a candidate at several schools during the off-season. Whether the Rebels will take a chance on another assistant is not known.

Those close to the search have indicated they would rather hire an experienced head coach. They could do a lot worse than Will Muschamp. It’s believed that Auburn will have to come up with a sizable raise to keep him around for a third season.

Something else to watch in the coming days will be the status of offensive coordinator Al Borges. Rumors have been floating around for weeks that Tuberville might go another direction next year.

With Kodi Burns expected to get the quarterbacking job, now is the time to make a change. Borges has seen his offense’s production deteriorate steadily since the championship season of 2004.

Auburn’s bowl prospects have changed somewhat since the Razorback’s win over LSU. Had the Purple Tigers made it to the BCS Championship Game it appeared that Auburn was headed to the Outback Bowl.

Now the likely destination is Atlanta and the Chick-Fil-A Bowl. The ACC opponent will probably be Clemson.

Tennessee looks like the leading candidate for either the Capital One or Outback Bowl should it lose to LSU. It will be Sunday before Auburn knows for sure where it’s headed.

Coaches

Now that it looks like Tuberville is staying (War Eagle!), I hope we can keep Muschamp. As for Borges, well, we'll always have 2004.

Keep 'em all......

Give Tuberville what he's asking for, pay Muschamp what he's worth, and keep Borges in place. AU will have the talent and depth next year to be near equal to the 2004 team and the last thing we should want is another offensive scheme to be installed with a huge learning curve. On another note I look forward to a great QB battle next spring between Caudle and Burns and maybe even Field though it would be a little surprising to see him win the position.

Amen, Todd92.

.....Look what Borges had to work with, this year. Three freshman starters on the o-line. Three of the top five tailbacks out to start, and one of the remaining two turned out to be a fumbler.

.....QB concerns me, as it looks like there's a whole lot of settling down of Kodi Burns, that needs to happen. I agree that the LAST thing the kid needs, is to have to learn a new system!

.....On the other hand, consider what we might could do IF Borges leaves. They could bring in Guz Malzhan, and Burns would be back with a familiar offense. Imagine the Wildcat formation with Burns, Fannin, and Lester... On the other hand, Tuberville would never sign off on a wide-open attack, I don't think.

.....Next year's QB is a concern, and a big one. It's hard to win in the SEC with a rookie. But, the biggest concern, to me, is at fullback. We've got no experience coming back, there. If Tub wants to keep pounding the ball, we've got a huge hole to fill in the next 9 months! If we can develop Chris Slaughter and Tim Hawthorne, we'll be dangerous at wide receiver, next year. I'd make all of those guys, Smith, Billings, Dunn, Hawthorne and Slaughter work a couple of hours a day with the ball cannon. We can't have the drops, next year! Same for the tight ends! The starting o-line seems to come back intact, bigger and stronger.

.....We should be loaded in the front seven, on defense. At corner, though, there is worry. Jeraud "dog-bite" Powers returns, but who else? MacFadden? To me, Powers is more of a boundary corner. We need a field-side guy who can fly, and play the ball. Gotta find some folks to cover speedy SEC wide-receivers. Luckily, we lose Florida/Harvin/Tebow off the schedule, and pick up Tennessee, who'll be breaking in a new quarterback.

.....The Peach Bowl vs. Clemson is good for me. I could go, but I'd imagine that finding a ticket is going to be tough. Both schools are less than 3 hours from Atlanta, and travel well.

Quarterback and Fullback

I agree Acid,,,,the qback is the BIG question and concerns me more than the fullback.  Does anybody know anythng about Barret Trotter?  What about him as a possible candidate at quarterback next year?

We haven't had a "true" fullback, that started, in sometime now.  Carl Stewart stepped up and did good job and I believe we have somebody there that can do that again, although I do wish we could find another Heath Evans type fullback.

Barret Trotter.....

good mobility, quickness and speed, could develop into a good college QB. Certainly fits Borges offensive scheme with a decent arm, quickness, and speed. All that said it would be shocking to see him not redshirted. He is gonna have to put on some muscle to be able to take an SEC beating. He is listed at 6'1" 192 lbs the one time I got to see him play he didnt look even that big. I will also be shocked if Caudle and Burns dont come out as 1 and 2 on the depth chart in that order but only because Burns seems to have had trouble learning the playbook. Should Caudle continue to be injury prone and Burns not be able to manage the offense then we are in trouble (maybe ensminger should have stuck around).

As far as full back? Who knows. AU has recruited several fullbacks the most recent being freshmen John Douglas and Jeffery Tarver and dont forget Ryan Hastie who will be a senior next season and has seen some limited playing time at least last year. and then there is redshirt freshman Jason King who was expected to add some pounds. John Douglas is supposed to be a good blocker with good hands for recieving.

Peachy Keen

I'll go in for a little Peach Bowl action, especially Clempzin, who skated by OBC Saturday night.

Hey--a little off the subject here:  WTF with attack dogs at the game?  What moron had that idea?  I'v never seen attck dogs at any game before.  Has anyone else? This is Auburn, not Auschwitz.  There's no need for dogs to be there, especially when they can come back and bite you in the butt (or hand).

I'm sending Jay Gogue an email asking for an explanation.
