Auburn Freshman Murdered Near Campus

By Jay Coulter
jccoulter@gmail.com

The Auburn family is in mourning tonight after the murder of 18 year-old Auburn student Lauren Burk. The story will make you absolutely sick to your stomach.

Burk was found shot near campus on Tuesday night.  She was quickly transported to East Alabama Medical Center where she was pronounced dead. A few minute later, her car was found on campus in flames.

At this time, police have no leads in the murder. Burk was in her first year at Auburn and graduated from Walton High School in Marietta, Ga.

Police are warning students and residents to be careful on and around campus.

These are the sort of things that don’t happen at Auburn. To say the Auburn community is in shock is an understatement. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Burk family.

Take extra precaution if you live near campus and be safe.

The University...

...recently started up AU Alert.  They use an automated system to send email, text messages, and phone calls to students and faculty when something like this happens.    The first message that went out was TODAY at around 4:30 saying the rumors of a shooting today were not true.  The University has pushed this system very hard.  I hate that they failed to use it when it was needed.  Although this seems that she individually was targeted, the killer could have been on campus today waiting to kill again and hardly anyone would have know it.  I wasn't aware of it until 1:00 this afternoon.  How would you feel if you later found out your son or daughter had sat beside the killer in class today?  IMO, the University failed to do their part when it comes to getting the word out.
Like you said, this just isn't something that happens at Auburn.  Let us all keep our thoughts and prayers with Lauren's family and friends.

Condolences from K-State

Jay, that's just awful to hear.  I wish the Auburn community nothing but the best.

Principally, my thoughts and prayers go out to the young woman's family.

We'll carry the banner high!

Burning the car...

.....is curious. I'm not a detective, but that screams, "known associate." Let's hope APD can pursue this with the vigor they have for traffic tickets.

.....My heartfelt condolences to her friends and family. I don't know how one emotionally survives outliving their child...

I thought the same thing...

...about the car.  This person knew her.  Maybe some obsessed guy.  I hope they catch him.  I wonder if she was able to relay any info before she died.

Looks like she was from my neck of the woods.  Walton high is 2 miles down the street from me. Lots of Cobb county kids end up at Auburn...

I think I remember that a student was murdered on campus around 1986 or so. Vaguely...

Just horrible...

saddest way to miss a test..

to say campus has been rocked is an understatement. the girls are fearful, the guys are trying to be as comforting and protective as possible -- this is all just an awful mess. i was actually in the same history class with Lauren this semester, and, even though i didnt know her personally, i can tell you all it is an extremely sad way to miss a test when your instructor emails you postponing a test and canceling a class because someone in your section is violently murdered. just like Jay said -- this just does not happen at Auburn and i truly hope that whatever coward is responsible for this is brought to justice. as for everyone else -- please continue to keep the entire community and especially her family and sorority sisters in your thoughts & prayers.

i will also agree the AU Alert system was not used to its fullest potential, but i also understand there may have been reasoning behind not immediately releasing the info if they truly know things that imply there is no other immediate threat. i also am extremely happy that they have finally changed the night security shuttle hours to run at ALL times that tiger transit is not running. this is a HUGE step towards safety on campus.

Looks like a similar crime has happened...

...in Chapel Hill, at UNC. Another female student shot and killed.

That is so sad

I hope everyone is praying for her family and friends. That is terrible thing that happen. It is also very shocking for it to happen in Auburn.

Take time to Pray....

for her and her family. I can't imagine losing one of my kids to anything, much less violence.

War Eagle you may be thinking of the shooting on Toomer Street in '87 (I think). A guy I knew pretty well got manslaughter for it. There was also another homicide at Patio Apartments around the same time '87 or '88. I know most of the details from Toomer Street and remember some from Patio. Both were manslaughter cases.

Patio...

Yes, I think I'm referring to the Patio apartments death.  I just remember someone got killed--can't remember the charge...

What happened with the Toomer St. case?  I don't think I remember that one.  Seems that both were during my tenure on the Plains.

toomer street...

If you remember Coach Casey (assistant coach under Dye) his daughter Starr lived on Toomer at the corner of glenn and Toomer. She had a party in which 4 youths form Dothan (not students) attended uninvited (crashed) and were being rather obnoxious. Starr asked four guys to ask the youths to leave. After a little chemical fueled testosterone chest thumping and a scuffle one of the youths from Dothan went to his car and retrieved a small caliber pistol. One guy took exception to the gun and took it away from him. The four youths ran to their car and started to drive off. The young man with the gun took a pot shot at the car as it was leaving never thinking he would hit anything meaningful. The one shot hit the driver in the head. Two young mens lives were messed up, one dead, the other spent almost 2 years in prison with a manslaughter charge.
